The purple thumb.

The yellow wristband.

Visual shorthand proves that sometimes an image is worth more than a thousand words.

This is Breast Cancer Awareness month — you’ll be seeing a lot of pink ribbons. And a good thing, too. The breast is cancer’s second-most favorite target — if you or a woman you know hasn’t had a brush with this disease, consider yourself blessed.

Thanks to the damaged economy, research money is harder to come by.

Thanks to our disgraceful health insurance situation, millions of women who would benefit from mammograms don’t get them.

So it’s a good thing that corporations step up to promote breast cancer awareness by creating pink products that they promote in October.

Master Lock is also donating $15,000 to research, a small sum to be sure; I’d argue that the visual prod of a pink lock is much more valuable. in addition to locks, I’ve found a water bottle and a rubber duck.

And, while I’m at it, here’s a link to help pay for mammograms for less solvent women and a free-click site where clicks, over time, turn into mammograms.
