READER COMMENT: Has Jesse never been to Costco? [Jesse: Yes.] Even at Amazon you can buy 3,000 square feet of the Kirkland plastic wrap in a cardboard version of the ChicWrap holder for $24. That compares more than favorably with the Chic refill roll of 250 feet (one roll) for $9.57! And the Kirkland wrap in its heavy cardboard boxes has the same convenient slide cutter of the Chic. My suggestion: If you prefer the pretty look, have one of your children do some creative paper collages on the Kirkland box and save the forty bucks that you would waste on the Chic box.

In the early 1950s, my family lived in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. I went to a school where a lot of the kids were named Hanes or Reynolds. The school picnics, as you may imagine, were a chance for bold face moms to strut their stuff.

One picnic was historic. A row of moms stood behind a long table, offering sandwiches probably made by their help. All had wrapped their sandwiches in wax paper. Except one. She used Sarah Wrap.

There was much whispering. What was that clear wrap? Where did she get it?

The word went out. That mom had recently been in New York.

“Yankees,” people said, and shook their heads in awe.

65 years later, we’re still using Saran Wrap. It sucks. The stuff doesn’t roll out easily or evenly. The cutter’s best use is for drawing blood. And yet we buy it again and again.

Liberation begins here.

Last weekend, in a lakeside cottage in end-of-the-road Minnesota, I watched my hostess use clear wrap efficiently and without bloodshed.

ChicWrap.

There are two smart innovations here. The first is that the container isn’t cardboard and has four non-skid feet to grip the counter or table. The other is that the cutter is a zip slide that zooms across the wrap in one motion.

The ChicWrap comes in 6 designs. I’ve showcased the most urban. It comes with a 250’ roll of wrap. [To buy a ChicWrap from Amazon, click here.]

No, you cannot slip a roll of Saran Wrap in the ChicWrap. You need a dedicated refill roll. [To buy a 250’ refill roll of wrap from Amazon, click here.]

But it’s more expensive than Saran Wrap. Why not make do? Here’s why:
