Holiday Ham: Can it be that time again? Here’s the classic recipe, easy to make, satisfying to all, and useful for days. Or you could — sigh — make lamb.

It’s not that our daughter requires more than a diet built around ketchup and marinara sauce for “brain development” and “focus,” but on the Shunryu Suzuki theory — “I think you’re perfect, and I think you can improve” — we decided she should take a supplement.

Fish oil.

Which she hated.

As would you.

Fish oil — this is a high class site, I’m told, so let’s put it politely — “repeats.” In addition to the hours-later aftertaste , there is a social issue: bad breath. If you want to be alone, fish oil’s the ticket.

Now your child can get all the benefits of fish oil without the ick factor.

And so can you.

The trick: krill oil.

Krill are tiny shrimp-like creatures — just two inches long — that travel in packs: 10,000 to 60,000 krill per cubic metre. Whales travel thousands of miles to the Antarctic, where they eat tons a day. Which makes krill “the fuel that runs the engine of the Earth’s marine ecosystems.” Or, more bluntly, “without krill, most of the life forms in the Antarctic would disappear.”

Krill oil — you take it in capsules; for kids, the capsules are mercifully small and easy to swallow — has all the benefits of fish oil, and then some. [To buy krill oil for adults from Amazon, click here. To buy krill oil for kids from Amazon, click here.]

Dr. Oz reports on studies that show krill oil works as effectively as omega-3s from other sources, but at a much lower dose. And — listen up, nervous grownups — krill oil seems to raise “good” HDL cholesterol and lower triglycerides. Some research suggests that people with arthritis who take 300 mg daily experience less pain and stiffness. (If I qualify claims, it’s because there’s always more testing to be done.)

Note: Krill oil is not suitable for anyone with an iodine allergy or shrimp allergy. You need to check your child for allergies before embarking on any supplement,

Magic? No. But we’re not looking for magic, just a stronger immune system. So we take our Probiotics and our vitamins. Now we’ve added one pill. I think we’re stopping here.
