Luxury items scare me. You get along without them, you weaken and get one, suddenly you can’t imagine life without it. Your next thought: There’s more great stuff out there, I should…

It’s not that I’m cheap, through I’ve heard the rumor. Like the French, I believe in One Good Thing. The high-priced blazer I can wear forever. The 1994 car I bought in 2002 and hope to drive for another 100,000+ miles. The signed Cartier-Bresson photo I bought years before he died. The plates commemorating Queen Elizabeth’s coronation that I bought for a dollar and use every day.

Would I have bought the Capresso coffee grinder? I had a cheap grinder, it was good enough, no way could I justify spending $90. But I mentioned it at dinner one night, and the next week a friend gave one to me. I couldn’t refuse it. I think lovingly of my friend every morning.

The Air Purifier? I would never have bought it. Again, a gift. Invaluable.

Last week… the Nespresso Milk Frother. Once again, a friend served coffee topped with frothed milk thick as shaving cream. I am a coffee snob. So when I commented on the excellence of her coffee, she gifted me.

And now I alert you.

It is the simplest device I’ve ever used. Use whole milk. Fresh cold whole milk, nothing else. Instructions say to fill the cup to the second line. Don’t. Fill just beyond the first level, so the milk just reaches the top of the frothing wheel. Press one to froth for hot beverages. Press twice for cold drinks. Walk away. Pour half a cup of coffee. In a minute, the frother light will go out. Off you go.

Maintenance: Wash the rim of the lid thoroughly. Wash the frother under a faucet. Do not use dishwashing fluid or anything more abrasive than a sponge. Wipe with a paper towel, making sure there are no milk cruds remaining at the bottom. Do not replace — repeat: don’t — the frother on the base until you’re ready to use it again.

Are there cheaper frothers? Many. Read the 1-star reviews on Amazon, and you’ll buy the Nespreso, a quality machine with good customer service and a one year limited manufacturer’s warranty. [To buy the Nespresso Frother from Amazon, click here.]

How can you justify the expense of a frother in a time when millions go hungry?

One: nothing stops you from buying the frother and donating to a food bank.

Two: As a friend says, “Everybody likes nice things.
