Guest Butler Preston Bealle recently made his debut on these screens with an enthusiastic recommendation for the APIE Portable Wireless Waterproof Outdoor Bluetooth Speaker, an amazing product that costs just $30. Your response was just as amazing. Prudently, I asked him if there are any other products he cherishes. And so…

WHY WOULD YOU BUY A CAR STARTER/TIRE PUMP FOR $69??

Because, when you need one, it might be worth $500 to you, even once.

Like the time I was leaving a restaurant and spotted a family with a small child and a dead car. It was 10:30 on a Saturday night. A tow truck was miles away.

I pulled my Stanley Jump Starter out of my trunk, and instead of waiting hours for a tow truck, they were on the way in about a minute.

But wait, there’s more. Only 1 of 10 gas stations has an available tire pump these days, though most of them have plenty of Twinkies and lottery tickets. Aside from helping with a flat, just keeping your tire pressure set correctly can improve your gas mileage as much as 10% and get you an extra year out of your tires. Right now, one of your tires is probably off by 5 pounds.

My family finds it even more useful for bikes. It’s a major pain to pump a bike tire by hand or load it in the car to seek air, but this will do it from flat to full in a few seconds in your driveway. On vacation, we pumped up 6 bikes in 5 minutes.

This unit is very well built by the estimable Stanley tool company, and costs 1/2 to 1/3 of comparable units. Mine is 3 years old and has been used at least 50 times. It has a nice LED flashlight that rotates 270 degrees and 12-volt and USB outlets to charge personal electronics, but that’s not why you want this around.

The first time you use it, it will probably pay for itself. And with all it can do, you may well wonder: Will it double as a defibrillator? NO.
